Myofacial Release During this technique, the therapist uses gentle, prolonged pressure to soften up connective tissue called fascia. Fascia is an interconnected sheet of tissue that surrounds bones, muscles, nerves, and all other internal organs and tissue. Because it runs in one continuous sheet from head to toe, tension in one spot can theoretically cause pain in distant muscules, nerves and so on. That's why the therapist may work on an area that may seem unrelated to your pain or injury. Myofacial release is often used to treat chronic pain (including headaches) or to restore range of motioin (which can be restricted to whiplash, surgery, or just poor posture). |
